Orthodontic appliances can transform a smile. Our before and afters photos are proof of that. But our patients have worked hard to get a beautifully straight smile by looking after their braces throughout treatment.
At Impression Orthodontics, we want you to get the result you want and deserve from treatment. Here are our 8 top tips for caring for your braces:
Brush your teeth, gums and braces three times a day (especially after eating). Wearing an orthodontic appliance won’t stop you from brushing your teeth, but you may need to change your brushing style slightly. We’ll show you the best techniques for brushing with braces.
Use a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash. Fluoride is proven to help prevent cavities, so by using both a fluoride toothpaste and a fluoride mouthwash you are doing your part to help reduce the risk of cavities.
Take your toothbrush and dental floss with you wherever you go. Keeping your teeth clean is a real factor in achieving the best result from orthodontic treatment. Most of us brush our teeth twice a day – after breakfast before we leave the house, and after dinner once we’re home for the day. But if you’re wearing braces you need to brush and floss after every meal, so always keep your tools handy.
Brush as we instruct you too. We’ll show you the best way to brush your teeth if you’re wearing an orthodontic appliance. This involves holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and applying gentle backwards and forwards pressure. We’ll give you a demonstration before you leave the clinic.
Clean your braces. This may sound like a strange thing to do, but food can get stuck in your braces and cause plaque to build up. Make sure you clean each tooth for up to 10 seconds and work the bristles gently around the individual brackets and elastic bands.
Use the right type of toothbrush. To get the best results from cleaning your teeth while wearing braces, we recommend using an Interdental toothbrush. This is shaped differently from normal toothbrushes and makes it easier to clean your teeth and your appliance.
Have regular check-ups with your dentist. Just because you’re seeing us for orthodontic treatment doesn’t mean you should stop seeing your dentist. He or she will have a keen interest in your treatment so be sure to attend your regular dental check-ups.
Be careful about what you eat. There aren’t too many foods you can’t eat while wearing braces but there will be some you need to avoid. Eating the wrong foods can damage your braces which can lengthen your treatment time. We’ve listed the best foods to eat and those to avoid while wearing braces on our life with braces page.
